427 - Last Look Back July

So both of these pages were actually done today (the joys of being off work). I knew I would have a lot of derby stuff saved up to work with so I was looking forward to making these.

So first up we have our amazing roller derby bout Block and Roll All Night which we went to Belfast for. I had so much stuff I did two pages.

Then we have all the derby love notes I've been given by other team members before bouts. They really give you that awesome extra boost and make you feel super happy. Again, two pages because I had quite a few.

426 - Bake Once a Month July

Okay so you might think I'm cutting this a bit fine, but I actually baked these cakes last Sunday, it's just taken me this long to find a space in my posting planner to get this post in!

For this month's bake I decided to return to my beloved The Hummingbird Bakery Cupcakes & Muffins book. I picked chocolate cupcakes and decided to top them with cream cheese frosting (as I've never made it) and add a little pink food colouring as well. They also had some chocolate flakes on the top.

I also piped on the icing with my icing bag (a first for me) and I'm sure you'll agree it's a lot neater than previous attempts.

These were so yummy. I used Hershey's coco powder and the actual cakes were just so chocolaty and yummy. Will defo be making them again, but maybe with just normal icing or chocolate stuff. Delish.

424 - Block and roll all night

So today I am off to Belfast with my lovely FVRG girls to take on Belfast roller derby in my third ever bout!

It's been a bit touch and go with my ankle, but I've been skating on it recently and it seems to be doing awesome. Stronger pain killers are working and I feel comfortable walking without my ankle support on. Win!

I'm so happy I get to go across and skate with my girlies, and I'm even happier to be back at skating now!

And double win for the weekend, I get my first official actually has my name on it team top. The first bout I played with FVRG I had someone else's old top which I had to cut the arms off to hid their number and I bought rubbish iron on transfers to put my name and number on the back (which have since peeled off). Even though I have Perth top (from when I guest skated) and my T Stop Birds t shirt (from the intreleague bout I never actually played in), the sexy vests I get before Saturday will be my first Parma Violents top with my name and number on it! Beyond exited.

Wish us luck!

422 - Paperchase goodies!

So you may have seen I ordered some stuff of the Paperchase website. I've obviously bought a lot of stuff from their shop but I've never actually ordered anything online. I was ridic excited when the parcel came. It was so lovely.

First up a new recipe binder along with some refills for it. The refills fit my old recipe binder too which I am currently working on right now, so I can make that nice and full before I move onto my new one.

Paperchase goodies

New stationery bits and bobs. I already have the cat highlighters so I thought I might as well get the panda ones too. The little box is a tiny stationery kit, with like a mini hole punch and stapler and things. So cute.

Paperchase goodies

These amazing city themed notebooks. I was only going to get one but I couldn't pick! Also some lovely pens but I got these from Asda.

Paperchase goodies

I got the notebooks because I wanted to start writing again. Not like a diary but I guess I used to do it with my owl book and I don't really have a place for it anymore. I used the tin I just bought and most of the stationery bits (plus so I already had) to make up a cute writing journal kit. It's so cute.

Paperchase goodies

I can't wait to get started!

421 - Work in Progress Wednesday

So this looks like I've not done very much, and to be honest, I haven't done loads. But bear in mind, I did finish my Cath Kidston cushion/make some perler bead coasters.

My Batman tableware set has no additions to it. I was hoping to work on some coasters tonight, but I ended up sorting out my Pinterest boards instead.

I have made a little bit of progress on my latch hook snowman.

Not much, but it's better than nothing. Because it's a snowman there is so much white! So it's getting a little boring.

Anyway, I'm hoping to get a lot more done next week, epecially seeing as I'm off work on Friday and all of next week!

420 - Cushions and Coasters

So it's happened. The Cath Kidston cushion is finally done. Check it out.

Crochet Cath Kidston cushion

Crochet Cath Kidston cushion

As you know, I ran out of wool and brought in the purple stuff I already had in my stash. That aside, it was all going so well until I got the to the joining the parts together part. It was supposed to be a wavy edge in the red wool but my head could not get around how it was supposed to be done.

Teamed with the fact that the back part was a lot bigger due to my using a different kind of wool, I had to change my plans. I did a purple edge around the front part to make both bits the same size and them sewed them together wrong sides in, before flipping it inside out, popping a little cushion in and then sewing the bottom up.

The cushion turned out to be a little small, so I sew around purple edge where it was meets the granny squares, meaning the cushion was jammed in the middle. Perfect. The little cushion also had buttons in the middle, which meant it dipped in. I had to cut these off after I had sewn the cushion up, but finally it looks right! Probably a lot more work than it should have been but I'm happy. And hey, I made something crocheted! WOO!

Also, my friend Lee saw my Batman tableware and asked if I would make him another Captain America coaster. As I got the fabric coaster from the pound shop over a year ago, I offered to make him a perler bead one instead (which would be more durable as a coaster anyway).

I decided one coaster wasn't enough so I made a superhero set of four. Hopefully he likes them.

I love finishing crafty projects!

417 - Sketchy Saturday 4

I'm glad I'm making the effort to draw regularly again. It's nice seeing something on Tumblr or Pinterest, and just being like "right, I'm going to draw that next week".

This is my drawing this week. I little grim, but I loved it when it popped up on my Tumblr dashboard.

Here's a link to the original.

I loved the colours in this and how a lot of it was down with just shading. I tried my best. I remembered half way through I actually have loads of lovely shading pencils. Doh! Need to remember for next time.

415 - T shirt quilt

You may have noticed that one of my New Year's Resolutions is to make a quilt. I really want to make a t shirt quilt, mainly because I have a lot of t shirts I don't want to get rid of but no longer fit me.

Now this is quite scary for me. As you know I don't have the best relationship with my sewing machine, and I've never made anything near a quilt in my life!

However, turn to Pinterest and I've found some awesome inspiration.

So once I get paid I'm going to buy the supplies I need (like wadding and t shirt stabiliser) and get cracking.

If you've made a quilt before or even a t shirt quilt specifically, please leave me some advice in the comments! Wish me luck.

414 - Work in Progress Wednesday

Well this is literally as close to the end of Wednesday as I can get, but I've been watching movies all night with the boy and our friend Matt, so I forgot about this till now. To fulfil my love for features that start with the same letter as the day we're posted on, here's Work in Progress Wednesday.

Basically every week I'll show off the things I have in progress in my basket in the living room in a bid to shame me into finishing them quickly ha ha!

First up we have my Batman tableware. Half way done on the coaster. The place mats and the tablecloth are still not started.

This is my snowman plush latch hooking kit. I have to latch hook it all and then sew it together, so it maybe looks a bit mad right now. This is two sections fully done.

So my Cath Kidston kit is nearly done. I had a few problems with the wool running out and me having to swap it out for another wool that made it bigger at the back than the front. Whoops. So all I need to do now is find a cushion pad for it and join it together.

Hopefully I will have made progress on all of these by next week! PHEW!

413 - Stationery love

I love stationery. But then if you read my blog, like ever, you'll know that.

This post is going to look specifically at letter writing type stationery. I've liked the idea of having pen pal for a while, and I found someone to write to in the back of one of the issues of Cross Stitcher. While I'm not sure how much we'll write back and forth or anything, I'm glad I've done it and I guess we'll just see how it goes.

I have a couple of nice letter writing sets, but it never hurts to look at more does it. Right?

412 - Tattoos

A post I've wanted to do for a while is a post with the story behind my tattoos. While I'm not a painted lady by anyone's standards, I do have six tattoos, all of which I totally love. So I thought it might be fun to look at them in a little more detail.

Tattoos are such a big part of my personality and I believe they help show off my creative nature as a person. I've had a lot of negative comments about my tattoos too, but that's something you just have to live with I guess. As long as I like them, that's all the matters. I'm the one who has to look at them everyday!

Lower back - Bill's Tattoo Shop.

These two tattoos were my first two, and I got them within about a few months of each other, with one on each side of my lower back. These tattoos started out at temporary tattoos I bought while on holiday one year. After wearing them once, I bought another pack with the sole purpose of keeping them in case I ever wanted to get them actually tattooed. The bird came first, and after I found out it didn't hurt too much, I got the feather too.

Feet - Tikki Monkeys.

My rose tattoo has to be one of the quickest I've decided I wanted. When I used to work in Tesco, one Saturday another girl I worked with came in with an awesome start foot tattoo. I loved the look of it so I spent the Saturday and Sunday night researching and drawing my perfect foot tattoo. By Monday I was inked. I originally wanted something a little thinner, along the edge of my foot, but Alex, the tattooist drew up his own version, and changed the placement a little. Obviously he knew better. I'm so glad he changed it because I totally love it the way it is. Plus it seems to be in the perfect place that most of my open shoes show it off.

My ankle tattoo was a picture I found on the Internet and decided I wanted. I love the colours and the delicateness of it. Me and my friends Eleanor and Lee all packed into the tattoo place and got a tattoo that day. Eleanor got a Celtic symbol and Lee got the Biffy Clyro "b". It was an awesome day with friends, and I remember chilling out in Lee's flat applying Bepanthen afterwards.

Leg - Tikki Monkeys.

There is a Suicide Girl who has a tattoo of a heart listening to headphones on her stomach, which goes round her side a little. After seeing it I had pretty much fallen in love, and knew I wanted something similar on my thigh. I popped in to see Alex, after he had done such a good job on my rose, and asked him to draw me up a little something. Even the basic five minute sketch he did for me right there made me decide I wanted it. After a lot of dropping of source material for him (which headphones I wanted. I picked the furry pink and white skull candy ones), and finally deciding on a size for my tattoo, I went ahead and got it done. It took three sessions and was definitely the most painful of my tattoos. The chord of the headphones goes all the way around my thigh, which means it's actually really long. Getting that chord done was so sore but totally worth it.

My thigh tattoo only really gets seen in the summer or at roller derby, but I love it. I get to see it pretty much all the time.

Wrist - Red, Hot and Blue.

My original plan for my wrist tattoo was to get a tribal style rose and a vine wrapping round the other side (much like my thigh). However, the receptionist at Red, Hot and Blue said they didn't do tribal style tattoos and that the vine would look rubbish. Okay, new idea then. I just opted for a normal rose, because they are my favourite flower.

Me and an ex boyfriend decided to go and get tattooed at the same time. I was never going to go for matching or name tattoos. Our tattoos aren't even on the same part of our bodies. But we just thought it would be nice to get at the same time. I love the colours on this rose. The hints of blue are just so cool.

So there you go. None of my tattoos have particularly deep meanings. they are just things I like. I've been planning to get another rose for my gran Rose who passed away a little while ago (a yellow one this time as those were her wedding flowers), but I'm never sure where to get it so I haven't taken the plunge yet. For a while I was convinced I was going to get it on my ribs, perhaps with a song quote under it, but I wasn't convinced I wanted one there/what song quote to use, so it never happened. Now I'm considering getting it on my other wrist, so I sort of match.

I will definitely get more tattoos, but I don't have the desperate need right now.

410 - What's in my derby bag

Okay, this post might not be interesting to those of you who don't skate. In derby, there is no right or wrong set up for your skating gear. There is certain gear that every skater has to wear, but it's pretty hard to find two girls who have the exact same set up.

So I thought I would show off my skating set up, which may only appeal to derby geeks! So welcome to what's in my derby bag! I've included links to products where I can.

Derby gear

First up we have my skates.

Derby gear

Derby gear

My skates are called Jekyll and Hyde, purely because one of them used to tear the skin on my ankle up something rotten when I first got them. I seem to have broken them in now though.

My actual skates are Riedell R3 Jam Quad skates. These are one of the cheapest but still good for doing derby in skates around, and most derby girls start skating on these. While a lot of people tend to upgrade to something else, I love my R3's. I think if these ones ever die, I'll just buy another pair, but white. Apart from the initial ankle rubbing, I've never had any problems with them.

My wheels are a mix of Fugitive Pushers (black) and normal Fugitive wheels (pink). I would love to say I picked them for some geeky reason, but I picked them because I could get pink ones, and this was a common combo recommended to me by other derby girls. Again, I've never really had a problem with these wheels, and I'm not one for spending a lot of money on loads of different sets of wheels.

Other changes I've made to the original layout of my skates include adding blue squishy bushings, pink wheel nuts, round toe stops , Bones Red bearings , pink toe guards and my own laces.

Phew I guess I have made a lot of changes!

Next up we have pads. You may think spending a lot of money on pads is a waste of time. After all, they're not as sexy looks as skates or anything. However, pads are the big that come between your body and the nice hard floor. So it makes sense to spend a lot of money on them.

Derby gear

Derby gear

Derby gear

My knee pads are Rector Fat Boys, my elbow pads are Anarchy and my wrist guards are Triple 8. I recently swapped to these gloved wrist guards after my old ones fell apart. My knee pads are probably going to need changed soon too, but to be honest, I would probably go for Rector's again. I used to use normal Rector's when I first started, and loved them. Not that many other skates use them, probably because they are quite hard to get in the UK, but I love them.

Derby gear

Derby gear

Derby gear

The rest of my safety gear consists of 187 gaskets for under my knee pads, cut off socks I wear under my elbow pads to stop my skin getting annoyed, my lovely derby number arm bands, my Protech Dent mouth guard and my Nutcase helmet (complete with personalised stickers).

And finally, all the other random crap I carry in my skate bag.

Derby gear

Baby wipes and deodorant for post skating rankness, spare toe stops, mouth guard and laces, my skate tool and tape for keeping your pads taped up.

If anyone says derby is a cheap sport they're lying. You don't need to buy everything I have, as a lot of the thing I have on my skates are upgrades to make skating a little bit easier. However, it's an ridiculously awesome sport, and well worth spending all your money on!

408 - Granny love

Granny squares

So for someone who can't crochet, I think I'm doing pretty well. Tonight during an Evil Dead marathon I finished my last two granny squares. While I obviously still have to sew in the ends and do the back of the cushion, all the baby granny squares are finished.

Woo! I'm very happy. The back is just one giant granny square, so I shall be tackling that soon. Only a couple of mistake, but granny squares are pretty forgiving.

407 - Goodies

This week I treated myself to some goodies from two of my favourite shops; Hobbycraft and Paperchase.

First up some cute mini cross stitch kits from Hobbycraft. I was planning on making these into cards but I love them so much I think I'll mount them in mini frames or something so we can use them as decorations. I'll need to add them to my Christmas make list.

I also got a few lovely paper cutters. The big blue one make corners into rounded edges, which I think will be nice for cards and things. I also popped to B&Q and got some paint chips after seeing a tip on Pinterest for using them to get lots of lovely cut outs in loads of different shades.

Next up was Paperchase, where I got lots of lovely stickers, along with a letter set and a set of magnets that were in the sale.

Yum yum yum, I can't wait to use them all!
